Practical guide

Do you need a car in Favignana?

Almost everyone asks, and the short answer is no: you do not need a car on Favignana, and for much of the summer you are not allowed to bring one. The island is nine kilometres long and you can cross it by bicycle in half an hour.

The rule, in two lines

From 15 June to 30 September, motor vehicles belonging to people who are not permanent residents of the island cannot land on Favignana. This is not new for 2026: the Comune renews the measure every spring, and the 2026 ordinance is number 21, dated 27 March. The forms for requesting an exemption are published alongside it.

Who is exempt

The categories have been stable in recent years:

  • residents of the Egadi archipelago;
  • owners of property on the island who are registered for IMU or TARI;
  • visitors staying for a minimum period, set in past years at six days and evidenced by booking documents;
  • vehicles serving people with disabilities, displaying the relevant permit;
  • public transport, emergency services, police and goods vehicles.

Penalties are not symbolic: the 2023 text set them between 430 and 1,731 euros.

One honest warning: dates, thresholds and paperwork change from year to year, and this page does not replace the ordinance. If you plan to travel with your car, the only source that counts is the register of the Comune di Favignana, linked at the bottom of this page.

Getting here

From Trapani, by hydrofoil: around thirty minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day. Trapani Birgi airport (TPS) is half an hour from the harbour, Palermo Punta Raisi (PMO) one hour and forty minutes. From May to October there are direct flights from central and northern Europe.

If you are driving through Sicily, the simplest option in high season is to leave the car in a car park in Trapani and board as a foot passenger.

Getting around the island

Favignana is just over nine kilometres long. Almost everyone uses a bicycle, and it is also the right way to understand the island: the town, the plateau, the coves along the eastern shore. For longer distances or windy days there are scooters, electric cars and a local bus service.

From Pirrera

The transfer to and from the harbour is included in the stay, so the first and last half hour of the holiday are not your problem. Bicycles, scooters, electric cars and boats are rented directly through us: tell us before you arrive and they will be waiting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my car to Favignana in August?
Only if you fall under one of the exemptions in the municipal ordinance. The one most visitors use depends on the length of the stay, which in recent years has been set at a minimum of six days. The exact conditions and the application forms are published every year by the Comune di Favignana.
How long is the crossing from Trapani?
About thirty minutes by hydrofoil. Departures run throughout the day, and far more frequently in high season.
How do I reach Pirrera from the harbour?
We take care of it. The transfer to and from the harbour is included, and we arrange bicycles, scooters, electric cars and boats on site.
